Fear
of
Heights

With Cumbria-based psychotherapist Liz King

Have you been told, "Don't look down" or "It's just mind over matter"? Unfortunately, these are not helpful phrases when it comes to managing fear at height. We know that fear or anxiety can be limiting, whether you're hiking along cliff tops, sight-seeing via lifts and escalators, or anywhere that involves facing a large drop - there's potential to have a negative experience. This can repeat itself and possibly get worse over time.

Continually, we've been told in books and the media that fears can be 'overcome' and 'conquered'. This is also misleading, when talking about fear of height, implying that fears can be defeated and removed permanently.

This new course allows you to explore fear of heights and grow in confidence at a gradual pace. We make it easy to integrate the approach back in your life afterwards. Based on our combined decades of experience working with a broad spectrum of people in the outdoors. We've designed a great weekend in the fresh air set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Across two days we explore

  • Why fear of heights (FoH) is fundamentally a natural and healthy starting point

  • The neuroscience behind responses to height

  • Tools for managing fear

  • Ideas for growing in confidence beyond the course

How we achieve this

The course mixes indoor and outdoor experiences.

On Day 1, we meet at a friendly indoor space for an introduction and short discussion. We introduce scientific concepts to give you a background understanding. There's time as a group for questions and reflection. After lunch, we venture outside to a flat but rocky landscape to begin practical coaching, building confidence in the outdoor environment. Never strenuous, designed around you, to explore practical movement skills in the outdoors in a fun and easy way.

Day 2 is more outdoor based and we mix fun activities that give you a gradual and comfortable approach to expand your confidence. This can include walking, climbing and activities near height, supervised by qualified professionals.

Who is suitable

The course is ideal for adults who are looking to grow in confidence walking or climbing near heights. Perhaps you have had a negative experience in the past and are looking for support restarting hobbies or interests. The weekend has a bias towards outdoor activities, but is not limited to folk who are outdoorsy. The theory and practical sessions are designed to give any individual a boost to their confidence and feeling of self-control, among a small friendly group. We check with you before confirming your booking, to ensure all participants will benefit from the weekend.

"After working with so many individuals, from young people to military professionals, I saw the impact of fear and human responses to it. I'm determined to enable everyone to fufill their potential, and that was one of the inspirations for this, so I could spend more time helping others with fear in small increments." Ben

"With a background in both psychotherapy and the outdoors,

I'm interested in working alongside people to get the most of

their adventures. The fear of heights course fits perfectly,

working at a deeper level to really understand what holds people

back and how we might help people flourish." Liz
